Cranberry production in Peru grows 796% more than four years ago but its price in farm falls

The latest report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation on the national production of blueberries reports that the 2018 reached a production of 94,805 tons. However, its price on the farm fell from S / 11.3 to S / 7 per kilogram.

In the 2018, a national production of 94,805 tons of blueberries was achieved, which represented an increase of 796% more compared to 2015 y 81% more compared to 2017, according to the latest report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri). Despite the growth recorded in production year by year, the national average price in farm decreased.

While in the 2017 it was sold at S / 11.3 per kilogram; in the 2018 the price fell to S / 7 per kilogram.

During the 2015 to the 2018, the blueberry crop passed from the 1,158 hectares to the 6,011 hectares, that is, it grew by 419%. The yields have also improved.

In the 2015, the national average yield was 9,145 kilograms per hectare. Instead, the 2018 reached the 15,771 kilograms per hectare due to the improvement in the planting and harvesting technique.

The regions of La Libertad and Lambayeque are the ones with the highest yields. In the 2018 they reached 17,104 and 15,000 kilograms per hectare, respectively. Meanwhile he lower performance was recorded in the Arequipa region.

La Libertad, Lambayeque, Ica, Lima, Ancash and Arequipa, are the blueberry producing regions. Last year, the regions La Libertad and Lambayeque participated with 96% of the national production.

Blueberry Exports

In the last 5 years, cranberry exports have had a constant growth. In the 2018, 73,903 tons were exported with a FOB value of US $ 554,948 million, greater amount in 72% with respect to 2017.

As of October 2019, a total of 73,866 tons with an accumulated FOB value of US $ 537,646 million have been exported, expecting to close the year with US $ 700,000 million.

In the 2017, according to Adex, Peru was in second place, as a cranberry exporting country, with a share of 15% of the total exported.

Currently, The largest production of blueberry occurs in August to December. According to the world calendar of blueberry production, in Chile (second largest exporter) the highest production occurs between the months of November to March; in Spain (third largest exporter) occurs between April to May.

However, in Peru having an adequate climate for blueberry production, It could be produced between the months of April to July to take better advantage of the production niches.
