With the beginning of the end of the Chilean blueberry season, the evaluation period begins on how the fruit's performance was after the peak.

According to the Committee of Blueberries, during the week 6 s sent 4.606 tons, starting the period of descent in shipments. He also points out that currently the harvests are concentrated in the southern zone and that until the mentioned week the accumulated volume is 81.080 tons of blueberries, which represents a decrease of 3,8% at the same date last year.

The Committee also noted that the preferred destinations were the United States and Canada, with an 68%, followed by Europe, with an 22% and the Far East with an 10%.

Portalfruticola.com wanted to delve into this new stage and spoke with the president of the Committee of Blueberries, Andrés Armstrong, with whom they reveal more details of what has been and will be this season.

"This season started a little late and at the beginning there was some loss of volume and at times we had differences of up to 30% with respect to last season, a situation that has been adjusted today, and the 6 week the difference is 3,8-3,5% less in the accumulated ", says Armstrong.

The leader also points out that "It remains to be seen if it is exceeded last season. We already hope that with shipments this week start to lower more importantly in shipments. We will be of the order of the volume that was the previous season, between the 90 or 92 thousand tons ".

Regarding the markets there have been some differences according to Armstrong. "We had been growing at very high rates in Asia and Europe, and this season we have seen that the decline in Asia and Europe is more than in the United States. It has been in decline, unlike other seasons, in Europe due to the effect of the exchange rate, which has also happened in Asia. "

Armstrong also stressed that in the start and end periods is when more attention has to be paid to the information to make changes in the strategy of packaging and promotion. "We have been implementing a strategy of market diversification", he says, as an example of one of the changes, without neglecting the United States as the main market.
