Institutional support for the first large production of Galician blueberries
The company Horticina, located in the municipality of Cerdido in Coruña, has launched the first large-scale production of blueberries in Galicia, a project that today has had the institutional support of the Xunta and the provincial council.
The Regional Minister for Rural and Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, visited this plantation today accompanied by the territorial delegate of the Xunta in A Coruña, Belén do Campo, and the president of the Diputación de A Coruña, Diego Calvo.
With a net area of 72 hectares and 282.527 planted shrubs, this is the first large production of this fruit in Galicia and is the only one of such size in the north of Spain, highlights the Xunta.
These facilities have had the support of the Regional Ministry of Rural Environment of 250.000 euros and generate a significant social impact, with the creation of 20 temporary fixed jobs and 750.
In the next five years the collection of one thousand tons of blueberries is planned and the company hopes to open a new one in collaboration with Hortifrut soon.
Horticina was founded in the 2001 year to produce camellia flower, mainly in a pot, for the wholesale market. But in 2009, Hurricane Klaus devastated the farm by discharging salt water on outdoor pots, destroying more than 260.000 plants.
After this fatality, the company decided to bet on the cultivation of blueberries, which it hopes to produce on a large scale.
