SAG certifies export of queen bees from Ñuble to Canada

Shipments to the northern hemisphere country began in 2017, prompted by the high sanitary level of beekeeping in Chile. Canada will be the destination of 736 queen bees from an apiary in Chillán, after the Ñuble Agricultural and Livestock Service certified that they meet the health requirements of the importing country.

Beekeeping demand

The high beekeeping sanitary standard that Chile has reached, which is also a contrasting market that has availability of bees when the demand for these specimens begins in the northern hemisphere, are key factors that have allowed the sector to make shipments since 2017 in the Ñuble region.

High standards

“We are one of the few countries that exports queen bees to a market as demanding as Canada. The health of our beekeeping is a key factor, for which the SAG maintains constant vigilance to monitor the status of endemic diseases and prevent the entry of exotic pathologies ”, highlighted Eduardo Jeria, Regional Director of the SAG of Ñuble.

Certification and verification

SAG officials carried out the certification after verifying, through clinical inspection and laboratory analysis, that the apiary was free from the diseases American foulbrood, European foulbrood and varroa.

Beekeeping export

In addition, companies must comply with the national regulations that regulate beekeeping, that is, be registered in the SAG in this area and have the annual declaration of apiaries.

The queen bees were shipped in four boxes containing 184 small cages with one queen and five nurse bees each.
