Plant health: a global concern

The rising pest threat facing food crops worldwide is a concern that during 2019 and 2020 will take a important international relevance to promote actions that minimize risks and, above all, strengthen plant health.

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), declared 2019 as the thematic year of plant health and capacity building and the United Nations Organization (UN), established that 2020 will be the international year of plant health, events that seek to strengthen actions worldwide to counteract the effects of pests.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica, through a statement from the State Phytosanitary Service, He applauded these initiatives “in support of the importance of phytosanitary security in the world and especially to the effort of each country in the protection of vegetables ”.

According to figures from the IPPC, currently up to 40% of world food crops are lost annually due to plant pests. “In terms of economic value, only plant diseases cost the world economy around US $ 220.000 million a year and control of invading insects around US $ 70.000 million", It indicated.

On the other hand, it was detailed that plant health It is aimed at the prevention and control of pests that affect plants and plant products, including the regulation of imports and exports, through phytosanitary measures aimed at preventing and controlling pests that spread to new areas.
