SANSAN: Leaders in pots for berries

A tradition of manufacturing technical pots that goes back more than 50 years.

That is the hallmark of this Spanish company that has held patents for pots for cultivation since 1971. Since then, already in the 3rd generation led by José Sancho, the team of SANSAN continues to collaborate with the same enthusiasm with technicians and farmers from all over the world to develop substrate growing system solutions for each fruit and vegetable.

In 2010, SANSAN developed the first 7 and 10 liter raspberry culture pot, incorporating the know-how accumulated. The brand's models are characterized by attributes that allow root and plant development. These ensure perfect drainage, totally homogeneous thanks to its mesh bottom. By raising the bottom to generate aeration, it achieves root pealing inside and a guarantee of isolation from the soil, in addition to preventing weeds inside that compete with the roots of the fruit. The inclusion of interior ribs prevents the roots from twisting along the walls, thus reducing potential problems of strangulation. These properties continue to mark the difference between a good growing system and other more basic solutions today.

In 2011, the first blueberry growing pot was developed. Today, we work with 25, 30, and 40 liter solutions on five continents with the main red fruit producing companies. The company had the vision to understand that substrate cultivation could be an excellent solution to accompany the rapid growth of the sector. Indeed, the development of the crop is associated with a varietal revolution with excellent new proposals for varieties that will practically make the previous ones obsolete in a period of between 5 to 7 years. With this reality, growing in pots allows for easy varietal change, reuse of growing media and the possibility of achieving good harvest figures from the first year.

"It is true that it is a somewhat larger investment than other solutions, but the configuration of the pots, their excellent drainage, stability of the substrate and isolation from the soil, make the pot provide a differential factor in crop yields compared to solutions such as bags It really is an investment for more than 10 years that is amortized very quickly due to the yield it brings to the farmer," says Carlos Gómez-Albo, commercial director of SANSAN.

SANSAN has managed to find a balance between a high quality of products offered and a guarantee that the materials used come from recycled plastics. It is one of the axes of work to contribute as the first actor to the sustainability of the processes, something fully integrated in today's society.

Currently, the company continues to work on solutions that continue to allow cultivation in countries with climates that allow finding interesting plantation windows and adequate labor. If land and water are available, growing in a pot allows you to double the experience of the grower from other places with high reliability. In this way, optimal management of the crop is achieved by not depending on the soil and its sanitary conditions. At the same time, cultivation outside the soil in a pot allows for fertilization and water management, which, when well managed, will save water and costs. Proof of this is the growth of ranches that use water collection gutters at the bottom, pre-bent continuous rolls that allow the controlled evacuation of leachate to recovery areas.

Complementing its leadership in manufacturing solutions, SANSAN I develop pest control solutions through the use of traps and pheromones or specific attractants. They are alternative control systems to the use of pesticides that help reduce the level of residues in fruit. In red fruits, one of the main solutions is the DROSOSAN trap and its specific attractant to control the Drosophila suzukii. It consists of placing 120-150 traps per ha of raspberry or blueberry and allows reducing the population level. Especially interesting at the end of the campaign, allowing harvests to be extended by several weeks.

SANSAN It is active in the main production centers of the planet, and continues in its endeavor to be able to serve and improve solutions for cultivation on a daily basis with the same passion as on the first day. SANSAN will be present next Wednesday May 31 and Thursday June 01 in the XXVI International Blueberry Seminar Mexico 2023 in the Hard Rock Hotel Guadalajara, visit us and find out about the products and services they offer for the Mexican producer at stand #23.
