Demand for blueberries soars in the markets

Already in previous years various studies, among which the Swiss company Firmenich stands out, one of the largest in the world in the fragrances and flavors business, consumers were privileging the consumption of blueberries for their healthy qualities of all known, but adding new preferences on the occasion, in search of classic flavors that “surprise”.

In a survey conducted in 16 countries, reaching a universe of almost 5.000 consumers, the consulting firm Firmenich concluded that the main emotion associated with the consumption of blueberries was happiness, followed by a feeling of comfort.

For decades, the consumption of blueberries has been associated with the well-being and health of people, which has remained immovable in the memory and consciousness of the consumer. They are even added qualities, such as unique flavor, comfort without having a stone, elegant color, turgidity when chewing, and others that are associated with it, increasing its reputation for versatile fruit. 

Firmenich's study predicted that “blueberry has a flavor that is timeless and long-lasting, but also increasingly relevant (…) with our growing focus on health and wellness, blueberries are rediscovering and growing to become one of the most relevant flavors in many categories ”. Of course, at the time the study referred to palate and aesthetic preferences under normal conditions.

In times of crisis

With the current public health crisis that plagues the world, originated by the COVID-19 pandemic, it has awakened in the memory of consumers the antibiotic, antioxidant, and above all immunological qualities of blueberries, raising the levels of demand in the markets. international, especially in the USA.

Roberto Sámano, from the Mexican company Berries Paradise, assures that the behavior of the US market minute by minute is reflecting the growth of berry consumption in supermarkets, because people seek to eat healthy to face the pandemic and above all, stay healthy.

Samano tells us that his company is closely monitoring the behavior of the US markets, since they are at the peak of the blueberry harvesting work.

In addition, he tells us that studies by Canada and the European Union regarding virus transmission have completely ruled out the danger of transmission through fresh fruit.

Regarding the possible difficulties of moving shipments, he explains that the provision of fresh food is a priority, so they have had all the facilities to get the fruit to the US markets. The agricultural industry is one of those considered special, he explains.

The Berries Paradise executive feels that the current Mexican blueberry season will be very successful due to this great growth in consumer demand and because "Asia is also demanding a product due to insufficient Spanish and Moroccan fruit suppliers."
