SMS: The innovative soil improvement system that combines hydroponics and traditional mode

The Soil Improving System (SMS) is currently the answer, not only to the loss of vitality of agricultural soils, but also to the access to this technology by producers, because its costs are much lower than those of hydroponics technology.

Not having adequate or vigorous soils for agricultural crops is a problem that many regions of the world have had to face with different alternative solutions, some have continued to convert forest lands for agricultural use, with the environmental damage that this entails, others use multiple formulas to improve the soil, and others opt for hydroponic technologies to supplant precarious soils, among other alternatives.

The hydroponics system has been successful in a wide variety of crops and is currently gaining a lot of ground in world agricultural activity, however, the high investment cost is a difficult problem for producers to overcome.

The Soil Improving System (SMS) is currently the answer, not only to the loss of vitality of agricultural soils, but also to the access to this technology by producers, because its costs are much lower than those of hydroponics technology.

Soil fatigue, the effects of monoculture, compaction, salinization and chemical treatments are some of the causes of problems such as flooding, nutritional imbalances and low presence of beneficial microorganisms, so that low productivity, in a precarious soil, it is not suitable for almost any type of crop.

The SMS solution to face this problem consists of applying coconut fiber to agricultural soil, by incorporating compressed coconut fiber plates in the 100x015x010cm crop line. These plates are hydrated by fixing dripper-holder pipes and, once expanded, the hilling is carried out. Then the transplant is performed.

Coconut fiber has shown to have an excellent water / air / solids ratio, and optimal root development. This product has been shown to improve soil structure, with readily available water and greater aeration capacity, as well as good thermal inertia, essential for the root system.

SMS is a novel production system that combines the advantages of two types of management: traditional soil cultivation and hydroponic cultivation, from which it draws the multi-frequency irrigation and the hydric and nutritional reserve. The difference with the latter is that it requires less initial investment and requires medium technical knowledge, without forgetting that proper fertigation management is of vital importance so that the roots can colonize almost the entire volume of coconut fiber incorporated. to agricultural land and, therefore, the advantages of this system are profitable.
