Switzerland: Berries area increases by 2,4%
This last year, the berry area in Switzerland has increased by 2,4%. In general, there is more surface area for most products in this category, with the exception of raspberries (5,6% less) and red currants (6,4%). On the contrary, this year, the strawberry acreage has increased again (1,5% more), as has that of blueberries (11,8% more).
In strawberries, a tendency towards modern cultivation methods is perceived. For example, more annual plants than biennials have been planted, and the most cultivated strawberry varieties are Darselect, Clery and Joly. On the other hand, the surface of Elsanta has decreased an 30%, while the Joly, Asia, Flair and Salsa varieties show a clear increase. Interestingly, although more land has been planted, strawberry sales have not always been easy in recent years, especially in high season.
Regarding the decrease in raspberry acreage, it is probably due to problems with the Asian fruit fly, which makes production difficult. Finally, despite all the problems, the other "berries" are also on the rise, so they continue to be a trend.
