"A Chilean, a Tree": Minister Walker promotes tree planting program for native species in public buildings

With the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, the undersecretary of the portfolio, José Ignacio Pinochet, the executive director of CONAF, Rodrigo Munita, and the seremi of Agriculture, José Pedro Guilisasti, led the planting of the terrace of the Ministry of Agriculture with the aim of promoting higher quality urban areas that are friendly to the environment, inviting other ministries and public services to join the initiative.

"We are setting an example as the Ministry of Agriculture, we are treeing the terrace, we believe that also in the center of the city we can plant native trees, nothing more beneficial to the environment for people than the native forest," said Minister Walker during the arborization of the space with peumos, quillayes and quebrachos, an activity framed in the program "A Chilean, a Tree" carried out by the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF), which aims to improve the quality of life of Chileans by means of the benefits that trees provide and raise awareness of them from a cultural, environmental and economic point of view.

Likewise, the Secretary of State highlighted the importance of initiatives such as these, which ultimately aim to increase tree coverage and its adequate distribution, without neglecting areas as important as work spaces: “we already had a first campaign in which More than 18 million trees were planted and now we want, on the terrace of the ministry, to have this pleasant work environment. The work environment is key ”, he declared.

For his part, the Undersecretary of Agriculture, José Ignacio Pinochet, pointed out that “in the Government of President Sebastián Piñera in 2010, this arborization campaign began and we have planted more than 20 million trees in this initiative since then. Here in the Metropolitan Region more than 3.250.000 trees have been planted. Obviously, this should inspire us all and we want this to be an invitation for the other ministries, public services, that they can replicate and we will always put the focus on the civil servants, on the people who work, that they have a better environment and hopefully that do it in connection with nature and what better if it is with native forest ”.

Meanwhile, the executive director of CONAF, Rodrigo Munita, highlighted the importance of “bringing to the center of Santiago, which is pure cement, bringing trees, bringing nature, bringing a more pleasant place to share, that people are also happier, since trees generate that. The campaign is to tree Chile, we need it since each tree contributes to CO2 control, so we believe it is a very good initiative. We are happy as CONAF, members of Minagri, to be able to do this face-to-face and symbolic act, but it has enormous significance, not only for us but for subsequent generations ”, he concluded.
