European Union and Chile reach historic organic agreement to boost trade

The bilateral trade of organic It will be facilitated as part of the agreement between the Member States of the European Union and Chile, which will soon recognize the equivalence of their respective rules and control systems.

The organic products of the EU have been boosted with the signing of a new agreement between the European Union and Chile, which will apply to fresh products, vegetative propagation material and seeds for cultivation.

The Council of the EU has signed yesterday (6 of March) an agreement with Chile to recognize the rules and regulations of each of the organic products, thus facilitating the trade of this type of products in both markets.

This means that The organic foods that are produced in Europe and that are covered by the agreement, can be marketed in Chile without further controls and the same applies to several organic Chilean products in the EU.

This includes vegetables, roots, tubers, fruits, nuts, coffee, tea, cereals, spices and much more.

It also applies to unprocessed plant products, live animals or unprocessed animal products (including honey), to aquaculture products and seaweed, to processed agricultural products intended for food (including wines) ), to processed agricultural products intended for animal feed, to vegetative propagation material and to seeds for cultivation.

On the other hand, the EU will recognize unprocessed plant products, honey, processed agricultural products for use as food (including wine), vegetative propagation material and seeds for cultivation, from Chile.

The agreement also provides for a system of cooperation, information exchange and dispute settlement in organic trade.

First organic agreement in Latin America

This is the first agreement of what the EU describes as a "new generation" of agreements in the trade of organic products and the first bilateral recognition with a Latin American country.

According to the EU, the new agreement will promote trade in organic products and increase EU production in the sector, which is constantly growing.

It also aims to improve the protection of the respective organic logos and strengthen regulatory cooperation between the EU and Chile in matters related to organic production.

After the adoption of the decision today, the European Parliament still has to give its consent, after which the Council will still have to formally adopt it.

"The organic sector is growing steadily and quickly and is a great resource for European agriculture and the economy in general. This agreement with Chile will boost organic production and EU exports, and therefore help generate growth and create jobs. The Council welcomes it with great satisfaction", says Roderick Galdes, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights.
