Uruguay will host the 2017 Chinese-Latin American Business Summit

Uruguay's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rodolfo Nin, declared on Tuesday, June 7, that the tourist city of Punta del Este, in southeastern Uruguay, will host the 11th China-Latin American Business Summit in 2017.

"We are signing a memorandum of understanding for Uruguay to host the summit", Nin said at a press conference.

Nin met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Yang Jiechi, a member of the State Council, on Wednesday.

«There are 28 agreements ready to be signed, covering various areas»Nin said before the meeting.

The signing of sanitary protocols for the export of Uruguayan food products to China is also expected, according to Nin.

«Citrus fruits and blueberries have already obtained health permits, and now we are negotiating on sorghum, corn, soybeans and rice»adds the minister.

Uruguay, temporary president of the Mercosur trade bloc, is interested in promoting negotiations on trade pacts between the South American group and China, says Nin.

With the recent political changes in Argentina and Brazil, the two largest Mercosur economies, the conditions for such an agreement are more favorable, according to the Uruguayan official.

Uruguay could be interested in China's "new silk road" project, Nin adds.

«The new maritime silk route can have a connection with the southern Atlantic region and Montevideo is a strategic place», concludes Nin, and adds that «Uruguay is the most stable country in the region, with the highest level of per capita income, political trust and democracy».
