USDA-APHIS publishes proposal for the implementation of a Systems Approach for imports of Chilean blueberries from Ñuble and Bío Bío
Currently, Chilean blueberries appear on the FAVIR list, that is, as an authorized import to enter the United States, but in some cases after being subjected to a fumigation treatment with methyl bromide, if in the production area there is the European vine moth (Lobesia botrana, EGVM), affecting the productions of the regions VI, VII, VIII or XVI.
In this framework, and after a long work of the blueberry industry, as well as ASOEX together with the authorities of Minagri, SAG, and USDA-APHIS, it led Chile to request the United States that given that there are areas of low prevalence for EGVM in Regions VIII and XVI, it is evaluated that blueberries from these two regions can be authorized to be shipped to the United States under a systems approach, thus replacing fumigation.
In response to this request, USDA-APHIS prepared a Commodity Import Assessment Document (CIED). "CIED determined that the systems approach reasonably mitigates the risk of plant pests associated with blueberries in Regions VIII and XVI," noted USDA-APHIS in the Proposed Standard published in the Federal Register.
