Use of growth regulators to improve firmness and size in blueberries

Daniel Díaz, Ph.D. in Physiology from Michigan State University, mentioned that the use of regulators can influence several aspects of fruit growth.

The use of regulators in blueberry production is a practice that seeks to improve the firmness and size of the fruit, qualities that, when optimally measured, contribute to the selling price. This is why, within the framework of the 2025th International Seminar Blueberries Consulting Trujillo XNUMX Mexican agricultural engineer Daniel Díaz participated, presenting the conference “Use of growth regulators to improve firmness and size in blueberries.”

Díaz, who holds a Ph.D. in Physiology from Michigan State University, mentioned that the use of regulators can influence several aspects of fruit growth, such as cell division, cell elongation, and the synthesis of compounds that affect firmness.

Some regulators can stimulate fruit growth when applied at certain stages of development, influencing the number of cells in the fruit, which contributes to a larger final size.

loss of firmness

Regarding the factors that influence the loss of firmness, he highlighted the following: fruit age, physiological ripening, cellular structure, nutritional status, water content, enzymatic action, and hormonal action. He also noted that chemical changes influence the weakening of the cell wall.

The use of growth regulators on blueberries can improve firmness, delaying or accelerating ripening. Achieving optimal firmness translates into improved resistance to handling during harvest, transportation, and storage, which reduces losses due to physical damage.

After harvesting, proper fruit firmness helps maintain fruit quality for longer, which is essential in the export market.

The strategic use of growth regulators can be a valuable tool for improving blueberry quality, increasing their commercial value, and optimizing harvest management. However, it is essential to adopt strategies specific to the characteristics of each crop, selecting the appropriate product and controlling application rates and timing. Furthermore, the use of regulators must be combined with cultural practices such as pruning, fertilization, and irrigation management.
