Zambia sends blueberry exports to China, new market praised

Zambia has marked its inaugural export of fresh blueberries to China, becoming the first southern African country to enter the huge Chinese market.

The export followed the signing of a protocol of phytosanitary requirements for the export of fresh blueberries from Zambia to China between the General Administration of Customs of China and the Zambian Ministry of Agriculture on September 7, 2020.

Exports will be made by a local Zambezi Berry Company.

The ceremony was honored by the President of Zambia, Edgar Lungu, and the Ambassador of China to Zambia, Li Jie.

Li said during the completion ceremony that the export of fresh blueberries from Zambia is an important milestone for agricultural cooperation between the two countries.

"It has contributed a lot to the promotion of bilateral economic and trade cooperation and the development of friendly relations between China and Zambia," he said.

The Chinese ambassador acknowledged the already fruitful achievements in agricultural cooperation, adding that several Chinese companies have seized opportunities to invest in the agricultural sector in the southern African nation.

According to him, efforts are being made to promote the export of agricultural products from Zambia to China, such as beef and lamb.

The soybean cake is undergoing inspection and quarantine access procedures and is expected to be exported to China next year, he added.

He expressed the hope that Zambian companies will take advantage of the country's favorable agricultural conditions and the huge Chinese market to produce more quality products for export.

For his part, the Zambian leader expressed his satisfaction that the country has marked an important milestone by being the first country in the southern African region to access the Chinese market with blueberries.

He said the country will be able to compete favorably with other blueberry exporters to China through better production and quality assurance.

The Zambian leader noted that the company's decision to start growing blueberries was in line with the government's agenda to promote diversification in the sector, and urged other companies to start growing high-value crops.
