Chile: Three specimens of fruit fly detected in Valparaíso
The Agricultural and Livestock Service reported the recent detection of three adult specimens of Fruit Fly or Mediterranean Fly (Ceratitis capitata) in the city of Valparaíso, Fifth Region, which triggered a contingency plan in order to avoid dispersion and achieve the eradication of the insect.
The detection would have occurred in the area of Rodelillo, in the Zeal (Area of Extension and Logistic Support) located in the town.
The SAG initiated a protocol of actions that includes the sampling of fruit and the application of bait around each point of detection in which there are hosts of the Mediterranean Fly. The purpose of these actions is to immediately detect their presence, prevent their spread and proceed to the elimination of the pest and its eradication.
This is in addition to the control work of the Mediterranean fly that the Agricultural and Livestock Service is carrying out since January in the municipality of Conchalí, and more recently in Quilicura, in the Metropolitan Region, and since the end of February in the city of Iquique, in the Tarapacá Region, after several detections of this insect.
The National Director of the SAG, Ángel Sartori, highlighted that these catches show the effectiveness of the "Trapping system that the institution has throughout the country and our staff that acted immediately deploying the control measures stipulated for these contingencies, such as the intensification of monitoring through the installation of traps, discharge and sampling of the fruit found in the 200 meters around the point where the pest is detected, and the application of chemical products in the fruit trees and on the ground ".
