"In Peru, the knowledge gap is very large, so this seminar has a high impact on companies and also on people"

Juan Pablo Bentín referred to the development of the Peruvian industry and its possible explanations, emphasizing that this development is in full swing and can reach unsuspected limits. He also stopped at the International Blueberry Seminar that will be held this August 4 in Lima.

- How useful is this meeting for the Peruvian industry?

- For us, it was important to hold the 2015 Seminar at JW Marriott, because in the blueberry industry we had not seen an event of such magnitude, organization and level of knowledge, we were very new and inexperienced in the cultivation of blueberries, and we are sure that the seminar that will now be held will be on the same or higher level, since our reality has also grown.

- And the producers it serves?

- For everyone it is important, because in Peru the knowledge gap is very large, so these initiatives have a high impact on the development of companies and also on people. Above all, this seminar, which has a very important scientific approach and a good level of experiences to share and learn even more about the correct management or production of the blueberry crop.

There is no doubt that the growth of the Peruvian cranberry industry has been explosive and notorious from all angles. There is no other case so vigorous in the continent, by the rapidity of the producers in the learning of handling of this crop and by the magnitude of the decisions of the main companies in terms of increasing the volumes of plantings.

Juan Pablo Bentín, from Valle and Pampa, says that the development of the Peruvian cranberry industry has been exponential, reaching an increase of no less than 2000 hectares of new plantations in the last three or four years. "There are no more than three companies that have raised these rates," he says.

Indeed, Camposol and Talsa are large companies that with their strategic decisions raised the amount of planted hectares, controlling approximately 80% of total production.

- Why this great growth?

- To the rapid learning of the producers and all the actors of the blueberry industry. We must point out that it is a new crop for us and is delicate and complex ...

- Are there other factors ...?

- It may also be the professionalization of the institutional platform, in this we must highlight the work of Sierra Exportadora, but this work has been developed mainly focused on the mountains, in the case of the great advances of producers in the northern coastal areas and south of Lima, we must give credit to the private initiative mainly.

Agrícola Valle y Pampa is located in the Pampa California, in the Humay desert in the province of Pisco, 240 kilometers south of Lima, and is one of the oldest companies in blueberry cultivation in Peru. Currently they maintain a volume of 45 hectares that they intend to increase rationally, consolidating what they have and opting for qualitative development, that is, aiming to improve the yields and quality of the fruit, in caliber, yield and flavor. Its differentiation also obtains it because it is a company that aims with conviction towards social responsibility and is governed by the parameters of the independent certification system for the Good Agricultural Practices of Global GAP and by Sustainable Water Industry Group, SWIG.
