Peruvian blueberry exports fall 48% in the first semester due to competition from Mexico
Peruvian blueberry exports fell in the first half of the year and their value fell 48% compared to 2019 to US $ 44.8 million, according to Adex.
In that sense, he specified that the drop in exports of US $ 85.4 million registered from January to June was due to the effects of COVID-19, low prices and competition with Mexico.
He noted that the United States - the main market for Peruvian blueberries - imported significantly higher volumes of the fruit from Mexico, which can offer much lower prices due to its proximity to that market.
Only in the first five months of the year, Mexico sent US $ 242.9 million.
He added that the year-on-year drop in exports in the first half comes after two years of impressive growth. The country registered a 260% rebound from January to June 2018 and a 93% increase in 2019.
In the first half of the year, blueberry exports to the United States totaled US $ 25.2 million, representing a 56% share of total exports, but a 58% reduction compared to 2019.
The second place is the Netherlands, with an increase in exports of 30% to US $ 13.3 million
The rest of the top five markets are made up of China, the United Kingdom and Brazil, to which the value of exports fell by 10%, 75% and 17%, respectively.
