Turkey plans to increase blueberry cultivation
The Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs of Turkey, Veysel Eroglu, states that his ministry is preparing an action plan to plant blueberry orchards in the Black Sea region up to 2019. The plan also aims to increase the diversity of agricultural products grown in the region.
120.000 seedlings will be distributed
The action plan aims to generate more income for farmers. “As part of the plan, 6 hectares have been planted this year; in 2017, 24 more hectares will be planted; in 2018, 55 hectares and, in 2019, a total of 200 hectares will have been planted”, says Eroglu.
In Trebizond and Rize, 400.000 blueberry seedlings are being produced in a nursery, of which 120.000 will be distributed to growers.
Eroglu has emphasized the potential to grow wild blueberries in the region. “An agricultural livelihood in the region will be ensured by providing the necessary infrastructure to increase the production and processing potential of our locals. The current blueberry fields in Artvin, Giresun, Ordu, Rize and Trabzon will be rehabilitated”, Explica.
Diversification of agriculture
The university of the region is carrying out research to expand the range of agricultural products. According to Eroglu, its objective is not only to increase economic income, but also to create a greener and cleaner environment for citizens.
