USA UU (New York): May frosts do not hurt blueberries much

The blueberry farmers of Baldwinsville, New York, were awake on the night of the 9 in May, after a warning of frost that meant they had to watch their crops well. The temperatures fell below zero in some low areas, endangering the delicate outbreaks.

At Abbott Farms, in Baldwinsville, the day began just after midnight in an effort to protect the blueberry bushes in the lower area of the plantation.

A large fan helped with the circulation of air to prevent the formation of frost on the plants and small fires created a layer of smoke on the field, almost as if they were clouds, to trap the radiated heat.

The efforts increased the temperature of the -3 ° C to the -2 ° C, enough to prevent that layer of frost from forming.

Like many fruit crops in central New York state, this particular berry patch already took a hit in March, when temperatures dipped below minus 12 degrees Celsius after a record warm winter.

Blair estimates that only 80% of this first blueberry variety will survive, despite his efforts. There are six other varieties of blueberries that should be in better condition. "The plants are fine, but they won't bear fruit and that affects our harvest," he explains, adding that some of the apple trees have also been affected.

Over the next two weeks, the flowers will open. Blair says that will give them a better idea of what the overall performance of the season will be like.
