Entre Ríos y Corrientes concentrate 40 percent of blueberry production in the country

The production of blueberries is increasing in Corrientes. The province has around 7 producers. Aires de Campo spoke with the engineer, Mariela Pletsch, Director of Plant Production of the Ministry of Production of Corrientes, who stressed that "Contrary to what people imagine, cranberry is produced in Corrientes, it is not an imported product".

The engineer highlighted that there are around 3 hectares of blueberries throughout the country, the NEA has about 1,040 hectares, 860 in Entre Ríos and about 180 hectares in Corrientes. It should be noted that the NEA represents 40% of the country's blueberry production, according to Pletsch. "Corrientes has plantations in Bella Vista, and now it is swelling in Virasoro, there is also something in Mburucuyá"Commented the engineer.

Engineer Pletsch told Aires de Campo that the largest percentage for export to the US is produced, "Argentina does not have the habit of consumption and it is also a spice that demands a lot of labor and production, requires drip irrigation and hail nets, are important investments"And added that it is a fruit that has a lot of cost for marketing, since it is only exported by plane (only one 3% is exported by ship).

Regarding the average yield in the production the engineer commented that 6 is calculated at 12 kilos per hectare with a production peak of 7 years. One aspect to highlight is that it is a crop that takes a lot of female labor "It requires the delicacy, it is a very valuable workforce of women and it is important that it be valued", The engineer emphasized.

"Corrientes is growing in this activity, there is an association of blueberries that is growing and we are planning a work together and we give it support in the health issue. They are organized companies that comply with a protocol. We seek to work with them especially against fruit flies", He stressed.
