Chilean fruit exports fall 5% in 2020

A report from the Chilean government found that fruit exports fell 5% in volume and 10% in value in 2020, with the drops even more pronounced for grapes.

The Chilean Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa) issued the First October Bulletin, where it reported that exports between January and September registered a 5% drop, equivalent to 2.84 million tons and a value of $ 5.360 million FOB, which represents a 10% decrease in value, according to MundoMaritimo.

Of this 10%, 74% corresponded to fresh fruits, 18% to processed fruits and 8% to nuts. Fresh fruit showed a 6% decrease between January and September, totaling 2.29 million tons and $ 3.979 million FOB, which represents a drop of 11% compared to the same period last year.

Within fresh fruit, the main export product is grapes with 600,700 tons and $ 1,012 billion FOB, which represents a decrease of 7% in volume and a decrease of 19% in value compared to the previous year.

Cherries followed with 145.000 tons and $ 953 million FOB, reflecting a 6% increase in volume and a 7% decrease in value.

It was followed by apples with 609.000 tons and $ 530 million FOB, reflecting a 6% decrease in volume and an 11% decrease in value.

These three products, together with blueberries, represent 73% of the total value of fresh fruit exported during this period.

Processed fruits registered 462,600 tons and $ 690 million FOB, reflecting a decrease of 1% in volume and a decrease of .5% in value.

The highest activity took place within frozen products (which represent 38% of exports), followed by dehydrated (24%), canned (20%), juices (12%) and oils (5%).

Because it can be adjusted up to six months after the date of the shipment declaration, this information does not include the Value Variation Report (IVV).
