USA: Blueberry production decreased 5% in 2018 season

The blueberry harvest season in the United States is about to end. However, some numbers are already known related to the production volumes of the considered “great market” of the berry sector.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA for its acronym in English) presented an advance in the figures of the production volume, which fell 5% compared to the 2017 season.

The digits point to 47.000 metric tons of blueberries corresponding to the harvest of the states of Florida, California, Georgia and North Carolina. While, between New Jersey, Oregon, Washington and Michagan, they accumulated 38 tons in total.

Opposed to the setback, the USDA affirms that in July there was a 2% increase in total supplies, both local and imported, highlighting markets such as Canada and Mexico.

On this, the US Department of Agriculture says that it was 29.500 metric tons of blueberries that are accounted for by that concept, 10.000 metric tons more than in 2017.

Price drop

Although the USDA notes that the numbers have not changed much, Free On Board (FOB) costs also showed a decrease. Average costs were US $ 15.50, 23% lower when compared to last season.

It also highlights a decrease in the import of Chilean blueberries to the United States, which decreased by 3% according to the USDA. So far this year, only 59.500 metric tons were counted.
