Radiate blueberries in destination would be very positive for Peruvian exporters

American consumer is familiar with this type of control that is very effective for pest mitigation. It could be implemented if the agreements that are being proposed are specified.

An important point on the agenda of exporters of Peruvian blueberries is irradiation. In fact, Sergio del Castillo, representative of ProArándanos, points out that this procedure is in the work plan of the union and that as negotiations on the subject advance, positive results may be obtained for its implementation.

In that sense, he estimated that the ideal is that Peruvian blueberries, as well as other products, can be irradiated at destination. "It is an effective means of phytosanitary control to mitigate pests," the spokesperson said.

He also noted that this method is accepted without problems by the American consumer and is widely used by the industry in that country to combat pathogens.

Regarding the production, he estimated that the blueberry is in a 'boom' of growth because there is a lot of demand in the markets. Therefore, he considered that it would be a good time to seek access to new places like China, since in the world there is much expectation about what is done in Peru for its peculiar characteristics.

One of these is its against seasonality. In the months of August, September and October, for example, there are no blueberries in sufficient quantities in the markets of the world, while Peru does produce them in that period and can make up for that lack.

"It is an advantage that we have in many crops as our harvest periods are longer and thanks to the different climates we have we can harvest at different times of the year"He said.

Data

According to the Peruvian Institute of Nuclear Energy (IPEN), irradiation is a technology that allows disinfecting food and slowing its maturation. The process is accepted by the World Health Organization and has been applied on a large scale for more than 40 years.

IPEN has a Multipurpose Irradiation Plant from 1996.
