Morocco: Berry producers seek opportunities in the European market
According to Jean César LEOSTIC, v chain supply manager, Moroccan blueberry production is well positioned and can offer fruit during a single window.
Chile ends its season in February and the next country that can supply blueberries in the northern hemisphere is Spain, which starts around mid-April. From February to April there is no other country that can offer quality Kirra blueberries during this period.
Kirra blueberries are exclusive to African Blue; They have an excellent size, color, sugar content and texture, says Jean César, which makes them an attractive option for consumers. The quality of these berries is the result of the interaction of the plant (of Costa Exchange) with the soil and climate of Morocco. Although local consumption is diverted towards strawberries, the demand for blueberries abroad has been robust.
"The demand is very high and will continue to grow as more consumers become aware of the benefits that blueberries have for health", Says Jean César. "African Blue will offer 3.000 tons of berries this season, and we expect to reach the 7.000 tons for 2017″
