New Law in France promotes the use of bioplastics

Last week the French parliament passed a law on energy transition and green growth that shows a strong commitment to bio-based and biodegradable plastics for packaging.

The law was proposed by Ségolène Royal, the minister of ecology, sustainable development and energy, and obtained the support of the president of European Bioplastics (EUBP) François de Bie.

According to the proposal, nuclear energy will play a minor role in the energy mix of France, while renewable energy will represent the 40% in 2030. Meanwhile, CO emissions2 will have to be reduced by 40% to 2030.

However, what most caught the attention of the bioplastics industry was the specific demand of the regulations in relation to proposing that bioplastics be the basis of lightweight bags for fruits and vegetables, as well as containers or compotes for the 1 home of January 2017.

«France has taken a step forward for the responsible consumption of plastic materials and for the treatment of waste"said de Bie. «the bioplastic materials will contribute their quota to an environmentally responsible economic growth«.

«These provisions represent an important step for the French bioplastics industry«added Christophe Doukhi-de Boissoudy, president of the French association Club de Bio-plastiques.
