USA: Retail sales of "berries" will increase by 7% per year
Consumers buy more and more "Berries", whether strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or blackberries. The agricultural credit institution Rabobank calculates that the sales of "Berries" they will continue to increase an annual 7% during the next three years.
The Food and Agroindustrial Advisory and Research Group of Rabobank recently published a report entitled "The rise of fresh berries in the US UU .: Who will benefit from your growth? ". According to the report, the state of California continues to be the largest producer of "Berries" of the country, and the products with greater profits in recent years have been strawberries and blueberries.
California produces the 88% of fresh strawberries in the country, plus a considerable percentage of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Florida is also a major producer of "Berries" fresh.
During the fall and winter months, imports of strawberries and blueberries from Mexico and Chile compete directly with the Florida season. Chile represents more than 50% of imported blueberries.
Right now, consumers are buying more "Berries" cultivated in southern British Columbia (Canada) and continue along the coast to Chile. This change will follow the seasonal patterns and the volume will increase in the southernmost regions.
During the last five years, strawberry production in California has increased tremendously. In 2008, the state produced 114 million boxes of strawberries, which amounted to 181 million boxes in 2010. Although the volume decreased to 178 millions of boxes in 2011, this year it should go back up to the 190 millions of boxes.
The majority of profits come from the increase in production. The total area of California strawberries was 14.779 hectares in 2008, and this year it has 15.270 hectares.
Cranberries enjoy a completely different situation. The global statistics show that the world surface of blueberries has quadrupled in the last 15 years and, at present, it is around the 80.000 hectares, the 80% of which are in North and South America.
