USA: Florida blueberries are virtually unharmed by frost
Despite the recent frosts that have affected the United States and that have devastated certain fruit crops, Florida blueberries seem to have been spared and left virtually unharmed.
According to Dudley Calfee, president of the Florida Blueberry Growers Association, information coming from the field indicates that the frost has caused minimal damage. «We pity the companions of the north«he points out. «Mother nature can be very cruel to agriculture sometimes«.
The significant losses suffered by blueberry crops in Georgia will mean that the harvest season for Florida producers will be lengthened, according to Calfee. «We could continue to collect profitably until the beginning of May, if we can keep our workforce«.
Unfortunately, not all Florida crops have escaped the frosts of St. Patrick's Eve. Gary K. England, director of the Hastings Agricultural Extension Center of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida, indicates that temperatures in the area dropped to -2,7 for several hours. Producers continue to assess the damage and those who did not cover their crops are likely to have to replant.
