Mexico ranks third largest producer of blueberries

EU is the main consumer of the product, while Mexicans consume on average 98 grams of cranberry per year

Mexico City.- In Mexico only the blueberry, and in 2018 more than 40 thousand tons were obtained, with which the country was placed as the third producer worldwide, although most of the national production is exported, especially to U.S. 

This is because Mexicans almost do not consume this fruit, as a Mexican consumes on average 98 grams of cranberry per year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).

Jalisco is the state specialized in the production of blueberry, because it enjoys ideal soil and climatic conditions for its cultivation. It also has all the technology and quality human resources to produce them, because berries, in general, require professional and specialized treatment for marketing.

The precise dependence on portal that the United States is the main buyer of Mexican blueberries, but also exported to Japan, China, Singapore, Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, Italy, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

The cranberry is consumed fresh and is used as an input for a variety of products such as jams, purées, juices, wines and ingredients for pastry and cereals; in some places it is also sold frozen. The cranberry belongs to the family of the ericaceae and is a berry native to northern Europe, Asia and America.
