New System of Classification and Labeling of Phytosanitary Products

CLP is the new European legislation for the classification, labeling and packaging of chemical products, adopted by the European Union through Regulation (EC) 1272 / 2008 and is the result of a harmonization of criteria worldwide and in a new way of expression of the characteristics already known. The products maintain the same composition, properties, conditions of use and efficacy, but due to the implementation of the CLP, the labels of the phytosanitary products will carry new pictograms.

It will be from the 1 of June when all the phytosanitary products that are put on sale must, in a mandatory way, be classified, packaged and labeled according to the criteria established in the so-called CLP Regulation. This regulation is applicable to all chemicals on the market, and modifies and repeals Directives 67 / 548 / CEE and 1999 / 45 / CE relating to such procedures in hazardous substances and preparations.

For a period of two years (from the 1 of June of the 2015 to the 1 of June of the 2017) there will be co-existing products classified, labeled and packaged according to the previous regulations, Directive 1999 / 45 / CEE (DPD), together with reclassified products according to the CLP Regulation. And as of July 1 from 2017, only products labeled under CLP may be marketed.

Among the most significant changes in the labels of phytosanitary products, the appearance of new symbols and a new nomenclature stands out. For example, the current squares printed in black on an orange-yellow background will be replaced by rhombuses with a red frame and a black symbol on a white background. In addition, the obligation to include a warning word ('danger' or 'attention') is included next to the symbols. Risk phrases will also be replaced by hazard statements, and precautionary statements will be changed.
