2th International Blueberry Seminar

In order to transfer technology and knowledge to face the technical challenges for the proper development of cranberry cultivation in Peru, the 18 of June the Second Blueberries Seminar was held with experts who for decades have contributed with their scientific research work to the development of the cranberry industry in Chile.

Important data

• The positioning of blueberry consumption in the world is consolidated. The characteristics of antioxidant and antibiotic, among other healthy qualities of this fruit are indisputable.

• Peru has picked up this challenge and opportunity by putting itself in the campaign with strategic long-term plans. Increasing exponentially the areas of cultivation and lowering the entry barriers for investment in the development of the blueberry industry.

• Peruvian exports of blueberries could reach 10 million kilos this year, which would represent an increase of 185.7% compared to the close to 3.5 million kilos dispatched the previous year.

• The main destination market for Peruvian blueberries is the United States 70% of our total shipments, Europe is destined for 15% and Hong Kong for the remaining 15%.

• The Asian giant is awakening to the consumption of blueberries, considering it a "super product". The next objective of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) is to promote the access of blueberries, pomegranates and stevia to the Chinese market, involving 1,400 millions of potential consumers.

• In the 2008, and only with 10 hectares, the Peruvian producers began with the development of this crop. The lack of experience has led them to face countless challenges and sometimes great failures, such as the death of almost all the plantations in the first years.

• During the first year of operations, 60% of the companies that chose to plant this new one failed. The main reason was the choice of irrigation water, a technical issue that was not mapped on the producers' radar.

• What Peru needs is the transfer of experiences and knowledge for the good development of the cranberry industry and placing it at a competitive level. This need is an opportunity for Chilean producers and experts who have been in the industry for decades (30 years).

• This Seminar had quality information / education and a first class service. The seminar was held at the Marriott Hotel in Lima, 4 had exclusive areas for networking (relationship development) and stands where attendees could access companies (national and international) suppliers of special services for the management of this crop.
