USA: New varieties of evergreen blueberries

The University of Florida approved the launch of three new varieties of blueberries.

The launch committee of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences approved the following varieties of blueberries: Avanti "FL 06-203, Arcadia FL 07-399 and Endura FL 06-377. These varieties present a better performance for producers who keep their crops active during the months of December and January.

The above, results in an early fruit production, beginning at the end of January and continuing until May. These three new varieties would present better yields since they adapt better to this type of handling.

Jim Olmstead, assistant professor of horticultural sciences and blueberry producer, said that the crops performed better in the central and southern part of the blueberry region in Florida, which includes the counties of Desoto, Hardee, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Manatee, Orange, Pasco, Polk and Sarasota. Those areas currently produce more than 50% of the state's blueberries.

"These new crops are added to a very short list of blueberries that can be grown successfully in central and southern Florida. I'm excited for the expansion opportunity these crops will give you from the Florida blueberry industry"Olmstead added.
