African Blue expands blueberry production in Morocco

Founded in 2007 and starting commercial production in 2008, African Blue Morocco has become a major player in the Moroccan blueberry sector. The company currently manages approximately 345 hectares of blueberry crops in the north and south of the country and operates as part of the global African Blue and Costa Group network.

In response to changing market demands, particularly the increasing importance of fruit size, uniformity, and quality, African Blue launched a ten-year restructuring strategy in 2021. The plan aims to replant and develop more than 706 hectares by 2031, utilizing Costa-exclusive blueberry varieties such as Eterna, Breeze, and Cascade.

Now in its fourth year, the strategy is beginning to bear fruit. Newly reconditioned orchards are showing improved fruit yield and quality. The first commercial harvests of the soil-grown Cascade variety are expected to exceed 15 tons per hectare, a testament to the yield potential of the new varieties under Moroccan conditions.

To support production growth, African Blue has also enhanced its post-harvest capabilities. Its 10.000-square-meter packing facility in Larache has been upgraded with a 12-lane Elefab mechanical packing line to increase efficiency and throughput. This facility plays a key role in the company's export programs, helping to maintain consistent product standards for international markets. Key export destinations include the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Asia.

Morocco's blueberry sector has expanded rapidly in recent years. The country exported approximately 67.300 tons of blueberries in the 2023/24 season, and forecasts indicate that exports could exceed 85.000 tons in 2025/26. African Blue is one of the companies contributing to this growth and helping to cement Morocco's reputation as a supplier of quality fruit.

In addition to current production, the company continues to evaluate and adapt new Costa blueberry varieties to local conditions. This process aims to align future supply with evolving consumer demand and environmental factors.

With continued investment in genetics and infrastructure, African Blue Morocco seeks to expand its role within the international blueberry industry, as Morocco strengthens its position among the world's leading exporters.
