Spain: Red fruit producers maintain the area planted from last season

Strawberry acreage increased by 1% and blueberry acreage 6,70%, while raspberry acreage decreased by more than 8% and blackberry acreage decreased by 4%

The planting phase shows a total planted area of the set of red fruits in the province of Huelva de 11.740 hectares for this campaign, Representing a a figure very similar to the 11.630 hectares of berries planted in the last annuitya, with a small increase of 0,95%. The Huelva Strawberry Producers and Exporters Association, Freshuelva, has reported that, according to the data provided by the associated companies, the area planted with strawberries amounts to 6.167 hectares, slightly higher, close to 1%, than the 6.105 hectares planted with strawberries last season.

El blueberry is  berry which presents a greater increase in its surface, specifically 6,70% with a total of 3.532 hectares, for the 3.310 planted last season. This situation is due, above all, to the bush that enters commercial production after three years of its plantation since many producers have opted for this crop to complement that of strawberry.

The agrarian organization has also verified a greater varietal diversification in this berry, which is consolidated as the second berry in the province behind strawberries, with a special increase in early varieties that allow access to the market from the beginning of the year or in the next Christmas holidays, even with small tonnages still.

The most negative data is presented by the raspberry, whose planted area decreases by 8,10%, going from the 2.070 hectares planted in the last season to the 1.902 that will be in the present, which will not be in production at the same time, since the varietal diversity allows to harvest raspberries in autumn and in spring. The raspberry data show that it is the red fruit that is most affected by the competition from extra-community productions during these last two months. The surface of the blackberries, for its part, it also suffered a 4% decrease, going from 145 hectares to 139 this season.

Freshuelva has highlighted that these data show that the commitment to diversification is consolidated of crops started in previous campaigns, thus guaranteeing the presence of Huelva berries in the markets for practically nine months of the year.

The red fruit sector faces a new campaign that has been marked by some rains after planting which have mostly done well, even though earlier losses on the west coast have caused losses. Subsequent high temperatures have caused replanting to be completed almost in mid-November. This, together with the cold in early December, is causing a delay in the harvesting of the first strawberries, which are maturing little by little.
