Pollination must be professionalized so that blueberry crops are of higher quality.
On the first day of 2025th International Seminar Blueberries Consulting Trujillo XNUMX, Alejandro Amado de Santis, the company's pollination expert Beeflow, explained that this process helps producers obtain higher-quality blueberries that are more profitable in terms of price for marketing.
"The benefit would be that the producer could obtain more kilos on the one hand, and on the other hand, a higher-quality fruit in terms of weight and size."
While pollination is a "complex" process, he said it should be given the importance it deserves and urged people not to underestimate it.
"It's a complex process and should be approached as such, so we shouldn't underestimate it and simplify it to simply renting hives and leaving them in the field for pollination."
It's important to note that pollination also involves measurements and management throughout the flowering process, and if done optimally, it produces a greater quantity of fruit.
Challenge
On the other hand, a major challenge is that, due to increased blueberry production, the area grew at a faster rate than the hive stock needed to pollinate it, leaving hives exposed to diseases, pesticide applications, habitat loss, and inappropriate agricultural practices.
"This results in an average mortality rate of 20 to 30% in Peru during the pollination period."
Decline of native bees
He also commented on the problem of the decline of native bees and even domestic bees, Apis mellifera, which are used for pollination.
"It's a global trend. Of course, there are regions that are more advanced in terms of pollination than others, and others are even more technologically advanced. They already manage hives and pollination with machinery and technology."
