The Dutch season of blueberries ends with sky-high prices

"It's been a very strange blueberry season. At the beginning of the season, there was a certain atmosphere of negativity due to Brexit and the fall of the British pound, but, in the end, it turned out to be a pretty good season", Explains Sil Moonen, of the Dutch company BerryFarm. "Right now, blueberries are very expensive".

In effect, the prices oscillate between the 12 and the 16 euros. "Everyone is looking for blueberries, but they barely remain in the market", Continues Moonen, who will continue harvesting until the 41 week. "Prices have been quite good this season, so they have frozen less blueberries, although, at the beginning of the season, we had very low prices, between 2,50 and 3 euros".

"The quality has also been good. In general, there has been a little less than last year, but the prices have been much better. In addition, retailers in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands use increasingly large containers, which greatly increases the consumption of blueberries. Instead of 125 grams, more cubes of 300 or 500 grams are sold and, therefore, more blueberries".

"In the German market, own production has also been completed. Peru could be harvesting now, but it does not send much to Europe because it has good demand from the US. UU and Asia. That's the difference between the South Americans and us: they do not compromise with anyone and sell their products where they receive better prices", Concludes Moonen.
