Trends for sustainable solutions in the agricultural world

Conscious irrigation systems, environmentally friendly packaging and sustainable strategies are some of the actions that are already underway in several companies in the agricultural world.

Behavior change in users

Consumers, more strongly in some countries than others, have begun to demand that brands reduce their carbon footprints. There is an increasing number of users who opt for healthier foods, which are organic and that are within everything, accessible for their economic levels.

Especially today, after living a year in a pandemic, this inclination towards the natural emerges with more force after strong changes in nature were perceived as a result of the limitations of movement of people.

The companies that join the initiative

Mercadona is one of the companies that has designed a green strategy since 2019. Recyclable products and the end of use of 3.000Tn of plastic per year, which would be equivalent to 120 trucks.

With this start-up, the chain involved all its workers in the challenge “Continue caring for the Planet”, making different processes in the assembly line more sustainable.

Green Plan

The "6.25" Strategy has a goal for 2025 to reduce plastic by 25%, make all packaging recyclable and recycle all plastic waste generated at its facilities.

The plan consists of a total of 6 actions that entail modifications in different company processes. From the redesign of the packaging of the future in coordination with suppliers, the adaptation of stores and logistics, waste management, among others.

In total, the company plans to invest 140 million euros in the next four years to carry out all the milestones that make up this strategy.

Circular Economies

In this way, the company promotes the circular economy by offering a category of products for efficient and sustainable use.

It should be noted that Mercadona has been part of the United Nations Global Compact since 2011 for the defense of fundamental values ​​in matters of Human Rights, Labor Standards, the Environment and the Fight against Corruption.
