The top 10 blueberry producing countries account for 88% of the world's total

The areas with the largest hectares of cultivated blueberries are located in America, representing 42.32% of the global total.
In 2023, there were 267.000 hectares of blueberries worldwide, which represented an increase of 7.23% compared to the 249.000 hectares recorded in 2022. In 2021, there were 237.000 hectares; in 2020, there were 219.000 hectares; and in 2019, there were 201.000 hectares.
This was reported by Fluctuante, with data from the International Blueberry Organization (IBO), which highlights that of the 267.000 hectares registered in 2023, Latin America concentrates the largest area with 113.000 hectares (107.000 ha in 2022), representing 42.32% of the total area. It is followed by Asia/Pacific with 93.000 ha (86.000 ha in 2022); Europe, the Middle East, Africa with 57.000 ha (52.000 ha in 2022); and Africa with 4.000 ha (4.000 ha in 2022).
He added that in 2023, world blueberry production reached 1.779.545 tons, with the main producing regions being China with 563.000 tons; United States with 283.000 tons; Peru with 234.000 tons; Chile with 132,000 tons; Spain with 71.000 tons; Mexico with 67.000 tons; Canada with 63.000 tons; Poland with 62.000 tons; Morocco with 56.000 tons; South Africa with 35.000 tons.
These ten countries accounted for 88% of global production. Furthermore, China alone accounted for 32% of the total, the United States 16% and Peru 13%.
World exports
Regarding global blueberry exports, he said that in 2023 they amounted to 748.000 tons, reflecting a reduction of -12% compared to the 850.000 tons shipped the previous year, due to climatic phenomena that affected the main exporting countries. In 2021, they totaled 774.000 tons; in 2020, they were 643.000 tons and in 2019, they were 583.000 tons.
Peru has established itself as the world's leading exporter of blueberries, with 207.000 tonnes in 2023 (276.000 tonnes in 2022), accounting for 28% of the total. It is followed by Chile with 83.000 tonnes (105.000 tonnes in 2022), accounting for 11% of the total; Canada with 82.000 tonnes (77.000 tonnes); Spain with 71.000 tonnes (87.000 tonnes).
The United States follows with 58.000 tonnes (54.000 tonnes in 2022); Mexico with 55.000 tonnes (47.000 tonnes); Morocco with 53.000 tonnes (53.000 tonnes); South Africa with 26.000 tonnes (27.000 tonnes); Poland with 26.000 tonnes (27.000 tonnes); and Hong Kong with 11.000 tonnes (20.000 tonnes). It should be noted that this study excludes large re-exporters such as the Netherlands.
World imports
As for global blueberry imports, they amounted to 822.917 tonnes in 2023, with the largest importers being the United States and the Netherlands, which together acquired 395.000 tonnes, representing 48% of the total.
In 2023, the United States imported 307.000 tonnes of blueberries (347.000 tonnes in 2022); the Netherlands 88.000 tonnes (127.000 tonnes); Germany 65.000 tonnes (77.000 tonnes); Canada 59.000 tonnes (58.000 tonnes); the United Kingdom 58.000 tonnes (61.000 tonnes); Spain 39.000 tonnes (43.000 tonnes); China 30.000 tonnes (43.000 tonnes); Poland 21.000 tonnes (25.000 tonnes); France 16.000 tonnes (15.000 tonnes); and Hong Kong 15.000 tonnes (26.000 tonnes).
The main suppliers of blueberries to the United States are Peru, which accounts for 36% of the total; Canada 26%; Mexico 24%; Chile 13%; others 1%. In the case of the European Union, the main suppliers of the aforementioned berry are Peru with 21% of the total; Spain with 18% of the total; Morocco with 15%; Netherlands with 8%; Chile with 7%; others with 31%.
