Morocco achieves record figures in blueberry exports to the US
The Moroccan blueberry industry has reached an unprecedented milestone in the US market. During the first quarter of the 2024-2025 season (January-March), blueberry exports to the United States soared to 525 tons, generating an approximate value of $5 million, according to data from the US Census Bureau, reported by the platform Eastfruit.
This figure not only represents a new record, but also exceeds the total volume exported to the United States during the previous four seasons combined. This achievement underscores Morocco's rapid growth and growing influence in the global blueberry market.
The early start of the 2025 season, with shipments beginning in January instead of March, responds to the growing demand for blueberries in the United States. American consumers increasingly value this fruit for its nutritional benefits, its versatility in the kitchen, and its reputation as a superfood.
Morocco, which entered the blueberry market in 2004, has experienced significant expansion over the past two decades. It currently ranks as the world's third-largest exporter, surpassing the United States, a pioneer in the crop, and trailing only Peru and Chile.
This success is partly attributed to the premium quality of Moroccan blueberries, which allows them to fetch higher prices on the international market, with a difference of $2 to $3 per kilogram compared to other producing countries.
In 2024, the area under blueberry cultivation in Morocco increased by 1.500 hectares, demonstrating the country's ambition to strengthen its presence in the global market and consolidate its position as a key player in the blueberry industry. This sustained growth and high demand from the US market suggest a promising future for Moroccan blueberry exports.
