Peru: Cranberry exports will increase by 100% next year

According to the Sierra Exportadora government organization, an agency attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), the production of blueberries in Peru at the close of the 2014 was 2.000 tons, of which 95% were destined for export, the United States being , Holland, United Kingdom and Hong Kong the main destinations.

Peru is growing exponentially in the production of blueberries and smaller quantities are being exported almost daily via aircraft holds on regular flights. However, New Transport SA, the company that leads the offer of perishable goods transport, has already sent the first official charter of 85 tons of blueberries to New York, which marks a milestone in the export of this product. This first shipment belongs to the companies Talsa and Camposol, pioneers in this crop but behind them come many more that have bet heavily on the blueberry.

“Our country has become a very competitive market when it comes to blueberry exports, an item that is constantly growing and has become a worldwide trend; If the same growth of recent years continues, our country could become the largest producer and exporter of blueberries in South America. The recent shipment that we have made to New York will mark a milestone in the export of this product and that can even displace the grapes, asparagus and avocado from the first places in Peru in a few years ”, says Martín Chávez, CEO of New Transport SA

“It is expected that in the following 3 years this crop will revolutionize Peruvian agriculture for its high protein value, its high commercial value and its high labor requirement. In this context, we project that blueberry exports maintain this growth, which in just 6 years went from 2,5 to 2.500 tons ”, Chavez finished.
