Peru: Export of blueberries will amount to US $ 70 million at the close of 2015

Peruvian exports of blueberries will add 70 million dollars at the end of the year, estimated the CEO of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velásquez Tuesta, who also indicated that this year Peru would be closing with 2.800 hectares of the so-called "Blueberry".

He noted that in the 2009 there were no exports of blueberries, however at the end of 2014, Peru was ranked as the tenth largest exporter of this fruit with a value of US $ 30 million.

Velásquez Tuesta said that blueberry exports estimated for this year were made taking into account three indicators: the increase of 30% of hectares of blueberry cultivation, because of 1.940 hectares that closed last year, passed to 2.500 to July of the 2015.

Also, the yield of adult blueberry plants that goes from eight to ten tons per hectare as a minimum, and to young plants whose minimum production per hectare on average is three to four tons, and in addition to taking into account the average price of US $ 14 the kilogram.

In order to increase national exports of blueberries every year, it is necessary to expand the planting of this blueberry in Peru. For this purpose, the president of Sierra Exportadora, especially invited the young producers to join, since through the associativity, this crop can be developed and managed to bring together between 25 and 30 hectares, and with it, take the great leap of export of blueberries.

"There is a huge roof for small producers, what must be done is to associate", emphasized the official of this agency of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).

Markets

He said that the United States continues to be the main market that demands the so-called "fruits of the forest", since it occupies the first position with US $ 600 million dollars. The United Kingdom is the world's second largest importer of blueberry, since in the 2014 it imported US $ 197 million. In third and fourth place is Canada and the Netherlands, respectively.

With regard to the Asian market, Velásquez Tuesta, said that in the last five years, China has become one of the potential markets of blueberry, since its demand has had an exponential growth; it has gone from importing US $ 68.000 in the 2010 to US $ 41 millions of dollars in the 2014.

"Peruvian producers must aim for this market, especially in the months of September and October when Peru has a large commercial window, as the United States and Canada, which are the major American producers, are finishing production in August; while Chile, the first exporter of blueberries in the world, with 20 thousand hectares, has just started production in November ", Dijo.

This is one of the reasons, he said, why a lot more Peruvian blueberry is now entering the North American market than last year. "There are 400 tons of Peruvian blueberry that has just entered the United States, and at a high price, US $ 14 per kilogram", He said.

Rental income

The expectation per hectare is that it yields between 10 thousand and 15 thousand kilos; however, taking into account that the investment per hectare of blueberry is US $ 40 thousand to US $ 45 thousand, with a minimum yield of 5 thousand kg / ha, to US $ 10 dollars per kilogram, in one year 50 would be obtained One thousand dollars. "With this income, the producers are already covering the cost of the installation per hectare," Velásquez Tuesta concluded.
