The U.S. is expected to approve a $5.000 billion investment for Morocco's southern provinces.
The United States is turning its promises into reality and is preparing to invest $5.000 billion to support the socioeconomic development of Morocco's southern provinces in Western Sahara.
For years, especially after the United States recognized Morocco's territorial integrity in the region in 2020, Washington has been committed to supporting inclusive growth in the southern provinces.
“A limited policy under the Joe Biden administration, the possibility of US companies investing in Western Sahara is expected to be facilitated by Donald Trump,” Africa Intelligence wrote on Thursday.
The report notes that the Trump administration is preparing to encourage investment by U.S. companies in Morocco's southern provinces. United States Development Finance Corporation (USFD) received the green light from Washington to pursue projects in the region.
The development cooperation agency has already held meetings with Moroccan stakeholders, including Moroccan banks and companies, to identify promising projects, the report added.
For years, the United States has been committed to continuing to support the development of Morocco's southern provinces. It further reaffirmed this commitment with its new stance in 2020, officially recognizing Morocco's full sovereignty over its southern provinces of Western Sahara.
Following his decision, the former US ambassador to Morocco, David Fisher, announced his country's willingness to open a consulate in Dakhla and to support and promote investment and development projects that bring "tangible benefits" to the region's residents.
"I come from the business world in the United States and I am completely confident that Morocco has a strong economic future ahead as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic," he declared in December 2020.
The development of the region is a pillar of the vision of the King Mohammed VIIn his speeches, the monarch shared his vision, emphasizing Morocco's determination to transform the southern provinces into an engine of development at the regional and continental levels.
The North African kingdom has launched several projects to fulfill this commitment, including the Atlantic port of Dakhla.
Morocco and the United States maintain a strong relationship. Now, both countries are seeking closer ties.
The United States reiterated its support for Morocco's territorial integrity. This was confirmed just a few days ago by the US ambassador-designate to Morocco, Richard Duke Buchan III.
During his hearing on 30 July, Buchan reiterated his country's position and praised Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only viable basis for a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
He also reiterated his country's determination to facilitate the United Nations-led political process and called on all parties to the dispute to participate in the process without further delay.
