Ukraine doubles its export of blueberries to the EU

In the 2016 summer, Ukraine has exported almost 1.200 tons of fresh blueberries, 3,5 times more than in the same period of the previous season. The countries of the EU have received most of these exports.

Fruit-Inform reports that Ukrainian exporters have sent more than 700 tonnes of fresh blueberries to the EU this summer, compared to the 300 tonnes shipped the previous year. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom have been the largest buyers.

«These external trade data confirm that Ukrainian blueberries have been increasing their demand in the EU market, and 2016 has been a real breakthrough, as exports to the EU have more than doubled.explains Tetiana Getman, an expert in the East European fruit and vegetable market. «As a result, blueberry prices remain relatively high in Ukraine, despite increased production«.

According to Getman, the blueberry planting area is expanding rapidly in Ukraine, so production is growing. Exports are the main sales market for Ukrainian blueberries, since internal market demand is growing at a slower rate, due to high prices. «Ukrainian farmers have been actively investing in the blueberry plantation for the last 5 years. The cultivated area has totalized 1.000 hectares in 2016, an 50% more than the surface of raspberries. As a result, it is very likely that Ukraine will increase its production of blueberries in the near future, while prices will fall«Concludes Getman.
