Spain, the gateway to Europe for Peruvian agro-exports

17% of all Peruvian agro-exports to the European Union entered through Spanish ports and airports, with the Port of Algeciras being the main entry point.

This 2021 Peru celebrates its bicentennial, a dream country, with an impressive geography contained in its sea, coast, mountains and jungle, spaces where its history is written and that house unimaginable mining, fishing, flora and fauna riches and, of course, its agriculture of ancestral origin that, modern, today marks the course of a global integration through the trade of its agricultural products.

Although the Peruvian agriculture boom that we know today takes little more than 20 years, these have been enough to be recognized in the five continents, keeping Peru in the first positions as an agro-exporting country of fruits and vegetables with the blueberry, asparagus, grape, mango, organic banana, ginger, among others. Sharing, with all the right, the condition of being part of the main countries considered as "The pantry of the world".

Peruvian agriculture

El Peruvian modern agro It has been taking advantage of its privileged conditions of geographical location, biodiversity, climate, land availability, water availability, etc., which allow it to have high productivity to serve national and world markets. But agriculture has not only been playing a fundamental role in the Peruvian economy but also in the social development of the country, as an example of this is its position as the second export sector and the one with the highest employment generation, impacting on the reduction of poverty, with the largest Economically Active Population that includes millions of farmers, mostly small productive units, who develop this noble activity.

El international market Today it is the natural market for modern Peruvian agriculture and 2020 was no exception. During the past year, Peruvian agro-exports continued with a growth of 6% compared to 2019, reaching close to U.S. $ 7.500 millones; being the European Union and North America who receive the highest percentage of our products. In the case of the old continent, in 2020 more than U.S. $ 2.700 millones of Peruvian agricultural products throughout Europe.

Agroexports

The growth of Peruvian agro-exports to Spain went from U $ 83 million the year 2000 and US $ 237 million in 2010 to US $ 454 million in 2020, with an impressive 23% annual average growth. Another important figure is that the 17% Of all Peruvian agro-exports to the European Union, they entered through Spanish ports and airports, with the Port of Algeciras being the main port of entry, making Spain an important gateway for Peruvian agricultural products.

There are hundreds of Peruvian agro-export companies that today have their target market in Spain, providing agricultural products of the highest quality such as Hass avocado, piquillo pepper, asparagus, grapes, artichokes, mangoes, paprika, onions, blueberries, ginger, citrus, among many other products of Peruvian agriculture.

However, as in everything, the path was not and is not easy. Peruvian agriculture faced from economic and political crises to strong attacks from nature, natural phenomena such as the Coastal Child of 2017, that activated many Peruvian coastal streams generating destruction and loss of life; However, we were able to overcome it, working together and with a modern and responsible industry, we managed to maintain production and growth, preserving not only crops, but also the hundreds of thousands of jobs generated in Peruvian rural areas.

Since 2020, like all countries, we have been going through one of the worst global pandemics suffered by humanity: the coronavirus. Peru protected its food supply chain, which allowed agricultural production, agribusiness and agro-exports to continue operating as it is an essential activity, supplying national and international markets without stopping, complying with all our commitments.
