Strategies to boost blueberry growth and demand

In the framework of the XXXIV International Blueberries Seminar Held on March 12 and 13 at the Lima Convention Center, the South American Operations Manager and Co-Founder of FruAction JEssica Messina, gave a presentation on "Perspectives for Frozen Blueberries in Peru: Strategies to Boost Growth and Meet Global Demand," where he reviewed relevant data on the global market, as well as its trends and opportunities to strengthen the presence of this agricultural segment.
Frozen blueberries have become a key product in global trade, driven by their emotional value and year-round availability. This growing demand, also fueled by the trend toward healthier eating, has led to the development and strengthening of production and exports, always prioritizing quality and efficiency throughout the supply chain.
Thus, the exhibitor conducted a global comparison across the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons, positioning Peru as a key player in the industry and a leader in fresh produce exports, creating an opportunity to lead in this segment as well. Furthermore, the exhibitor highlighted China as the leader in hectare growth, while the United States and Chile have seen some downward variations.
Analyzing frozen blueberry production, Jessica Mesina noted that there is an upward trend in production as demand has increased globally, with China and the United States being the largest producers of frozen blueberries.
Regarding the distribution of processed blueberry production in South America, the FruAction Operations Manager indicated that Chile is consolidating its position as the region's main supplier with 74%, while Peru, although currently the benchmark for fresh blueberries, represents 19% of the frozen segment. While Chile dominates the market, Peru has the opportunity to expand, leveraging its experience and production capacity.
On the other hand, regarding trade agreements and export quality, Messina emphasized the importance of ensuring price stability by respecting trade agreements that prevent sharp fluctuations in export prices, while strategic contracts guarantee predictable income for producers.
Regarding quality, he emphasized the importance of ensuring access to demanding markets by complying with sanitary and phytosanitary regulations, quality standards, and having food safety certifications, ensuring greater buyer confidence.
Finally, the speaker referred to innovation in storage and transportation, highlighting the function of IQF (Individual Quick Freezing), which optimizes the freezing of blueberries, preserving their texture and quality, improving the cold chain and prolonging the product's shelf life. This is in addition to the contribution of the incorporation of technology, which helps maintain continuous processing lines, and new packaging methods that guarantee efficient distribution without affecting quality.
