Peruvian exports of agricultural products grew in value 7% in September 2020

The growth of agro-exports was driven by shipments of blueberries, avocados, quinoa and ginger, products that represented 37% of the Peruvian basket.

In September 2020, exports of agricultural products reached US $ 664 million, showing an increase of 7% compared to what was achieved in the same month of 2019, Fresh Fruit reported.

Products that grew
In September, the growth of agro-exports was driven by shipments of blueberries, avocados, quinoa and ginger, products that represented 37% of the Peruvian basket.

During the month, blueberry shipments totaled 31.377 tons for US $ 202 million, 57% more in volume and 27% more in value compared to the same period in 2019. The oversupply from Peru, the world's main supplier, caused a drop in prices of 19%, reaching a value of US $ 6.44 per kilogram.

As in 2019, 51% of exports were concentrated in the United States, where the main buyer was Hortifrut Imports Inc. This market was followed by the Netherlands (27% share), where the main buyer was Camposol Fresh BV, and China (3%), where Shen Zhen Huilai Industry Development Co. Ltd. stood out.

Another product that boosted exports was avocado, whose shipments totaled 12.472 tons for US $ 28 million. Compared to 2019, fruit exports grew 70% in volume and 22% in value. It is worth mentioning that September is the closing month of the Peruvian avocado campaign. Avocado prices this month fell 28%, reaching a value of US $ 2.27 per kilogram.

The main destinations for Peruvian fruit were the Netherlands (42% share), where the main buyer was Satori SA; Spain (28%), with Trops Import-Export SLU leading purchases, and the United States (9%), where Mission Produce Inc. stood out.

Quinoa was a product with unexpected growth, since in previous months it had shown a contraction of 8%. However, in September, shipments of this grain totaled 4.695 tons for US $ 11 million, 28% more in volume and 7% more in value compared to 2019. Regarding prices, Peruvian quinoa was quoted at US $ 2.38 per kilogram, 11% less compared to the previous year.

The main destinations for quinoa in this period were the United States (21% share), with Nature's Intent Llc. as the main buyer; the Netherlands (14%), where Midsona Deutschland GmbH stood out, and Germany (12%), with Marsch Importhandels Gmbh. leading purchases.

Finally, ginger should be mentioned, as it was the product that grew the most in September. Root exports totaled 5.574 tons for US $ 10 million, 118% more in volume and 146% more in value compared to September 2019. The good reception of ginger in the international market caused an increase in prices of 13% until reaching US $ 1.84 per kilogram.

During this month, 49% of ginger exports were concentrated in the Netherlands, where Fairconnection BV was the main buyer. This market was followed by the United States, with a 25% share, where Smart Group Traders Inc. led purchases.

Products that fell
The products that fell during the month of September were coffee, peppers, onions and bananas, which require an intensive use of labor, which could not be covered due to the health protocols imposed by the State. to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. These products represented 17% of the export basket.

In September, coffee shipments totaled 25.428 tons for US $ 80 million, 32% less in volume and 22% less in value compared to the same period in 2019. The contraction of the Peruvian supply had a positive impact on prices, which grew 15% until reaching a price of US $ 3.16 per kilogram.

Regarding the main destinations of the grain, the United States (28% share) stood out, whose main buyer was Starbucks Coffee Trading Company, and Germany (25%), where Hamburg Coffee Company led purchases.

Peppers were other products that have not yet recovered. During September, shipments of the vegetable totaled 8.145 tons for US $ 13 million. Compared to 2019, exports fell 9% in volume and 16% in value. Despite the contraction in supply, the price of peppers was around US $ 1.62 per kilogram, 8% less than the previous year. The main destinations for these products were the United States (39% share), where Peruvian Import Co Inc. stood out as the main buyer, and Spain (27%), with Cebollas Bernal SL as the most important buyer.

Another product that fell in this period was the onion, whose shipments totaled 27.396 tons for US $ 12 million. Compared to 2019, its exports fell 9% in volume and grew 8% in value. It is worth mentioning that the growing domestic demand in Peru caused the exportable supply to be reduced.

Prices in the international market grew due to lower shipments and were around US $ 0.44 per kilogram, 19% less than in 2019. The main destinations for Peruvian vegetables this month were the United States (81% share), where the The main buyer was Bland Farms Llc., and Spain (17%), with Almacenes Lomar SL leading the purchases.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the banana, whose exports reached 12.537 tons for US $ 9 million in September, 27% less in volume and value compared to 2019. Despite the contraction in supply, the price of the fruit was of US $ 0.70 per kilogram, similar to that obtained in the previous year.

During this month, 32% of banana exports went to the Netherlands, where Port International Organics GmbH. was the main buyer. This market was followed by Panama, with a 25% share, where Chiquita Panamá Llc. was the only buyer.
