ComexPeru highlighted

Future phytosanitary opening would generate new opportunities for Peruvian agro-exports

Recently, the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa) he released his action plan for 2024, where it projects 13 new accesses to the international market for agricultural products.

The efforts will be focused on the destinations of Argentina for the entry of fresh pepper; Chile for table grapes; Merunas UAB for pomegranate and frozen fruit; Colombia for the lucuma; Malaysia for the avocado; United States for pitahaya, aguaymanto and asparagus; Brazil for hydrangea (cut flower); Japan for blueberries and New Zealand y Vietnam for citrus fruits. These countries will be prioritized as they are in the final stage of establishing phytosanitary import requirements. In this regard, the Foreign Trade Society of Peru (Comex Peru) will mention the dynamism of our exports of blueberries and citrus fruits, and their future markets: Japan and Vietnam, respectively.

Blueberries to Japan

ComexPeru reported that our blueberry exports grow every year. According to Sunat figures, between January and November 2023, shipments totaled US$ 1.378 million, showing a growth of +13.4% compared to the same period in 2022. In this way, what was recorded at the end of 2022 was exceeded (US$ 1.320 million) and a record in exported value will be recorded by the end of 2023. In addition, only 3 destinations concentrated 85.9% of our blueberry exports to the world between January and November 2023: the United States, which concentrated 57.3 % of the total, Netherlands (20.8%) and China (7.7%).

Likewise, according to the International Trade Center (ITC), in 2022, Japan imported US$3.274 million in fruits from around the world; and Peru was ranked tenth in the ranking of the main global suppliers of fruits to this market. Regarding Japanese imports of blueberries, these reached a value of US$ 21.8 million in 2022. Among the main supplier countries, Mexico (56.6% of the total imported), the United States (28.9%) and Chile (13.1%) stand out.

It is also worth highlighting that, given a future phytosanitary opening to the Japanese market, exports of blueberries coming from La Libertad (51.6% of the total exported), Lambayeque (16%), Ica (13.5%), Lima (10%), Áncash (6.2%), others (2.7%) would access a market of around 125 million population.

Citrus fruits to Vietnam

According to the ITC, Vietnamese fruit imports totaled US$3.354 million in 2022. Regarding global purchases of citrus fruits, these reached a value of US$109.2 million in that year, and among the main imported products, tangerines and mandarins stood out. satsuma (US$ 68.2 million), as well as fresh oranges (US$ 39.5 million).

In relation to our citrus shipments to the world, in the period January-November 2023, they reached the sum of US$ 267 million, which showed a slight contraction of -0.9% compared to the same period in 2022. Regarding the main destinations of our citrus exports, the United States concentrated 45.5% of the total, with a value of US$ 122 million, followed by the Netherlands (14.3%), the United Kingdom (9.2%), Mexico (4.9%) and Canada (4.7 %).

In the first eleven months of 2023, our global citrus exports from Ica (which amounted to US$ 126 million, representing 47.2% of the total); Lima (US$ 86.3 million and participating with 32.3% of the total); Piura (US$ 24.8 million and participating with 9.3%); La Libertad (US$ 22.1 million and 8.3% of the total); Lambayeque (1.4% of the total); others (1.5% of the total) would find in Vietnam a market of 98 million people to whom they could offer their products.

The work carried out by the public sector in terms of phytosanitary opening is of utmost importance, even more so for agricultural products as it is the second most important sector for the dynamism of our exports. Furthermore, the growth in the supply of our main agricultural export products generates the urgency of increasing access to new markets in order to search for destinations with better prices.
