SanLucar begins growing blueberries on former Cariñena vineyards.

The German-owned Valencian fruit and vegetable giant launches its project, which will ultimately occupy 420 hectares, with the first red fruit nurseries.

The Valencian company with German capital San Lucar Fruit has begun growing blueberries in the agricultural project it is promoting in Cariñena, where it plans to eventually acquire some 420 hectares of vineyards to produce the aforementioned red fruit, as well as kiwis, table grapes, and other tropical fruits. The agricultural giant has begun transplanting blueberries to the first nurseries it has set up northwest of the Zaragoza town, on both sides of the regional highway that connects with La Almunia de Doña Godina.

In fact, these greenhouses have been visible since the beginning of this year, when SanLucar workers began introducing plants into the nurseries after several months of constructing the infrastructure that houses them. The investment fund's initiative contemplates an investment of approximately €20 million for its first phase, which its promoters are now seeking to consolidate. With this, the wine-producing region of Cariñena, home to Aragon's largest appellation of origin, welcomes one of Europe's leading fruit and vegetable producers and distributors to its vineyards.

The agri-food company expects to develop the bulk of the fruit orchard plantation next year, when work will begin on a possible expansion of the cultivated area after finalizing the acquisition of land from approximately fifty local farmers. The Zaragoza-based real estate consultancy Remax is handling the transaction, led by Octavio Pequerul.

The project includes a gradual development of various infrastructures, which, according to various sources, includes the construction of a factory for processing fruit grown in the area. In fact, the Navarrese cooperative Agrocapelu is promoting something similar in Calatorao, which will give new life to the warehouses of the former Zufrisa with a fruit and vegetable project to grow and distribute broccoli and cauliflower.

SanLucar Fruit is a conglomerate founded in 1993 by Stephan Rötzer, a German born 58 years ago in Munich. Today, it employs 4.000 people and has a turnover of more than €680 million. Just a month ago, it closed the acquisition of the French company Buonanno. SanLucar products are present in supermarkets in more than 60 countries on four continents, and its sales volume exceeds 830.000 kg of fruit, vegetables, juices, and smoothies daily.
