World surface of organic agriculture grew an 20% in 2017

At the global level, the agricultural surface in organic production broke the historical record in 2017, reaching 70 million hectares, an 20% more than in the previous year, according to the statistical yearbook "The world of organic agriculture".

According to the report prepared by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (Ifoam) and the Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FiBL, for its acronym in German), it was released within the framework of Biofach organic food fair, held between the 12 and 15 February 2019 in Nuremberg, Germany.

The world market for organic products at the end of 2017 reached EUR 90.000 million, with the United States in the first place with EUR 40.000 million. Germany followed with EUR 10.000 million, France with EUR 7.900 million and China with EUR 7.600 million.

The study in the case of expenditure per capita, points to Switzerland as the leader, with EUR 288 per person.

Denmark has the largest market share of bio products (13.3% of the total) and India is the country with the largest number of producers (835.200 of the 2,9 million that were counted worldwide in 2017).

On the surface, Australia leads the ranking with 35,6 million hectares, followed by Argentina (3,4 million hectares) and China (3 million hectares).

According to the publication “Organic Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenges”, of the Office of Agrarian Studies and Policies (Odepa), based on statistics provided by the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), in 2017 the certified organic agricultural area in Chile reached 19.725 hectares, which means an increase of 25%, in relation to the 15.839 hectares certified in 2016. If to this surface, we add the organic surface of certified wild collection of 154.942 hectares, in 2017, the total surface Certified organic in Chile was 174.667 hectares, which represents an increase of 32% compared to what was reported in 2016.

According to Odepa figures, prepared with statistics from the National Customs Directorate, 2018 exported a total of USD 289,9 million in organic Chilean products, a figure that increased by 15,9% compared to the total exported in 2017. The main markets of destination were: United States (USD 181,8 million); the European Union (USD 65,2 million); Canada (USD 19,9 million) and United Kingdom (USD 10,4 million).
