Argentina: The Mediterranean fly returns to the fruit trees of San Rafael

The National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality (SENASA) declared San Rafael as a phytosanitary emergency, after the detection of male and female fruit fly specimens, one of the most harmful pests for fruit growing activity internationally.

That is why the Iscamen will invest 3 million pesos in order to initiate a plan of corrective actions in the town of Villa Atuel, San Rafael, after the two tracts were found in the official trapping network of the agency.

For local producers, this situation in which this region is located is related to the crisis in the sector, low prices and the abandonment of farms.

It should be noted that according to the Rural Development Institute, the southern area of the province is still the one with the most hectares implanted. At present between the southern departments (San Rafael and General Alvear) they concentrate the 31,5% of the hectares cultivated with fruit trees in Mendoza.

In total, according to the data of the IDR, between San Rafael and General Alvear there are 18.397 hectares implanted with fruit trees. Of which, San Rafael concentrates more than 90%.

The second place is occupied by the growing Uco Valley, followed by the East and finally the North.

Among the southern production is the industrial plum with 11.500 hectares, the industrial peach with 2.400, the peach for consumption with 1.800, the pear with 1.660, the damask with 620, the plum for consumption with 335, the apple with 73 and the cherry with 9 hectares.

Therefore, the importance of the appearance of the fly takes on an even greater relevance due to the prominence of the fruit in that area of the province and what its extension could cause.
